Adelante | La Raza Commission

Introduction

The Adelante: A Chican@/Latin@ Mentorship Project is a new program for the University of Washington aimed at the retention of Chicano/Latina/o students through a mentorship program called Adelante. It was founded by Latino Students in 2004 and was inspired by the success of the Pacific Islander Partnership in Education (PIPE) program that meets the academic needs of Pacific Islander students.

Program Outline

Mentors and Mentees have specific responsibilities outlined in the Mentee and Mentor Forms that they will have to fulfill in order to fully participate in the program. They must read and sign the form before beginning as well as turn in an unofficial copy of their grades and class schedule for the quarter. (Grades will only be viewed by Dr. Bonus). One of the most important parts of the program is to participate in the weekly study tables. This is for mentors and mentees as well as any faculty or volunteers who want to participate.

Mentors are required to meet individually every week, aside from the study tables, with their mentees. The goal is to build a partnership with the mentee, students can talk about school or any issues that they have regarding their education.

Mentees are also required to meet once a quarter with faculty advisor, Mr. Bonus. Mentees will also be eligible to compete for a quarterly Scholarship that the program will establish beginning of fall quarter 2005.

Mentors are required to fill out a weekly report on their work and progress.
